International Music Summer School in Assisi, Italy
A week of music and friendship in an international environment in Assisi, city of peace and natural beauty.
Who can participate?
The International Music Summer School (IMSS) of Orchestra Filarmonica junior is open to students of secondary schools with a focus on music, specialist music schools and Italian and foreign cultural/musical associations.
Age from approximately 8 to 18 years, preferably with at least two years study of the instrument. There are 100 places available. In the event of high demand, a waiting list will be set up.
Each participant must bring his or her own instrument (including keyboards) with accessories and music stand. The association provides percussion instruments, one pedal harp and one lever harp. Please contact us for more information.
What instruments are accepted?
Violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, horn, trumpet, trombone, classical harp, Celtic harp, percussion, guitar, electric bass, keyboard* (limited number of keyboard places).
Programme of activities:
In the morning and afternoon (a total of approximately 7 hours per day), the orchestra rehearsals will tackle the proposed works, alternating with sessions for individual instrument sections. Each sectional will be supervised by a teacher, while the orchestral sessions will be coordinated jointly by the instrumental teachers.
During the periods when musical activities are not taking place, the participants will be supervised by adult volunteers from the association.
Fun group and cultural activities may also be organised during the summer school. We will take the opportunity to visit some artistic/cultural sites and sites of natural beauty in and around Assisi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; in particular a full-day trip will be organised to the Frasassi Caves and a visit to the town of Gubbio.
Teaching staff:
The teaching staff at the summer school have extensive teaching experience at conservatories, specialist music schools and secondary schools with a music focus, and are also active concert performers.
The staff also includes young musicians who come from different backgrounds: classical music, jazz, music education. These differences encourage a depth of creativity within the staff which is reflected in the choice of music and the repertoire offered to the young players in the orchestra.
